St. John's Book Nook

by Betsy Papp, Librarian

The snow is gone and the flowers are blooming; it will soon be May.
May is my favorite month as I can finally get out into the garden and begin my planting. For the month of May we will be giving out packets of seeds to those who check out books. We’ll do this on Sundays so be sure to stop in and check out a book, video, or DVD.

Since we are giving away seeds, we have decided to feature our gardening books. We have several and they might help you in planning your garden. My quiet time talking with the Lord often happens while I am in my garden.

In the fall of 1983 we joined the Lutheran Church Library Association. This is an organization dedicated to helping church librarians. Last year this organization changed its name to the National Church Library Association as this reflects the scope of their ministry. There is a national conference held every other year usually in the Minneapolis, Minnesota area. We have attended this conference several times and were able to use the information we received in our own library.

We were having a difficult time trying to catalog one of our new books so I decided to read it to see where it belonged in our library. The name of the book is Castaway Kid by R. B. Mitchell. It turned out to be quite an interesting book and something a little different from what I had been reading. The book is about the author who grew up in an orphanage in Princeton, Illinois. He was abandoned by his parents when he was three years old and he remained in the orphanage until he graduated from high school. It is an amazing story of his strong will. His grandmother was his guiding light. His dream was to find a family to be a part of. This is the story of his struggle to find that family. After reading the story, I decided that it belonged in the Biography section and that’s where you will find it. Adults and Teens would enjoy reading this book.
