October 8, 2017 – Prayer in Time of Tragedy in our Nation and World

(Last Updated On: October 8, 2017)

Because of recent events in our nation and world we take this message time to spend in prayer. Please pray along with us.

Pastor:       Have mercy on me, O God, have mercy on me, for in You my soul takes refuge.

People:     I will take refuge in the shadow of Your wings until the disaster has passed

Pastor:      “Will the Lord reject forever?  Will He never show His favor again?

People:     Has his unfailing love vanished forever? Has his promise failed for all time?

Pastor:      Has God forgotten to be merciful?
Has he in anger withheld his compassion?”

People:     Then I thought, “To this I will appeal:
the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand.

Pastor:      I will remember the deeds of the Lord;
yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.

People:     will consider all your works
and meditate on all your mighty deeds.”

Pastor:      Answer me quickly, Lord; my spirit fails.

People:     Do not hide your face from me or I will be like those who go down to the pit.

Pastor:      Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you.

People:     Show me the way I should go,  for to you I entrust my life.

Pastor:      Rescue me from my enemies, Lord,

People:     for I hide myself in you.

Pastor:      Teach me to do your will, for you are my God;

People:     may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.

Pastor:      For your name’s sake, Lord, preserve my life;
in your righteousness, bring me out of trouble.

People:     In your unfailing love, silence my enemies; destroy all my foes, for I am your servant.

Pastor:      The Lord be with You.

People:     And also with you.

Almighty God, Merciful Father, a very present help in time of trouble, again we are brought to realize that Your thoughts are not our thoughts, Your ways are not our ways.  In your wisdom and providence, you have permitted the recent acts of violence in our country.  We implore you, Heavenly Father, let not the hearts of Your people despair, but sustain and comfort them.  Heal the injured, console the bereaved and afflicted, protect the innocent and helpless, and deliver any who are still fighting for their lives.  Through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

At this time of tragedy, let us pray for protection:  Almighty God, since You know that we are set in the midst of so many and such great dangers, grant us strength and protection and support us in all dangers and carry us through all temptations.  Through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Let us pray for our Nation:  Almighty God, You have given us this good land as our heritage. Grant that we remember Your generosity and constantly do Your will. Bless our land with honest industry, truthful education, and an honorable way of life. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion, from pride and arrogance, and from every evil course of action. Grant that we, who came from many nations with many different languages, may become a united people. Support us in defending our liberties, and give those to whom we have entrusted the authority of government the spirit of wisdom, that there may be justice and peace in our land. When times are prosperous, may our hearts be thankful, and in troubled times do not let our trust in You fail; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Let us pray for those who have been injured, for the families of those who mourn, and for those who wait to learn what will happen to those still in the hospital:  Almighty and everlasting God, the consolation of the sorrowful and the strength of the weak, graciously hear our prayers on behalf of those injured or killed in recent events in our country. If they are alive, bring them healing and strengthen their families.  If they have died, comfort their families with peace. As we go out into this world, provide opportunities for us to speak the comforting message of Your abiding presence and the hope of everlasting life for those who die in the Christian faith, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Let us pray for the police and rescue workers and all the medical personnel who are still working in difficult situations:  O Lord God, You have called men and women to various vocations through which they care for the needs of others.  We implore You to watch over and protect all who are working to care for those in need.  Defend them from all danger, and give them courage and endurance to attend their tasks to the best of their abilities and to the welfare of those under their care.  Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Let us pray for our leaders, that God would grant them wisdom and able leadership: Eternal Lord, Ruler of all, graciously regard those who have been set in positions of authority among us that they may be guided by Your Spirit, be high in purpose, wise in counsel, firm in good resolution, and unwavering in duty.  Grant wisdom to our president, vice-president, and to all others in positions of authority, that they may be patient in their judgments as they seek to bring to justice and peace in these situations.  Through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Let us pray for those who do evil: Almighty, everlasting God, through Your only Son, our blessed Lord, You commanded us to love our enemies, to do good to those who hate us, and to pray for those who persecute us. Therefore, we earnestly implore You that by Your gracious working those who do evil may be led to true repentance, may have the same love toward us as we have toward them, and may be of one accord and of one mind and heart with us and with Your whole Church; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Let us pray for peace in our nation and world:  Heavenly Father, God of peace and harmony, You would have Your children on earth live together in peace and quietness.  We implore You to frustrate the plans of all evil men who would stir up violence and strife; spoil the weapons of those who delight in war and bloodshed; and according to Your will, end all political, economic, and religious conflicts throughout the country and world.  Teach us to examine our own hearts so that we may realize our natural depravity and inclinations toward envy, malice, hatred and enmity.  Lead us to confess the truth of your Word.  Help us by Your Spirit to crucify the flesh and to root out the evil that would lead to strife and discord, so that to the best of our ability, we may be at peace with all people.  Above all, we ask you to fill our hearts with zeal for the proclamation of the good news of Jesus Christ who alone can give peace to sinful men, a peace that is far above human understanding.  Help us to become not just peace keepers, but peace makers.  Through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Let us Pray for peace which comes through Christ alone:  O God, from whom come all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works, give to us, Your servants, that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to obey Your commandments and also that we, being defended from the fear of our enemies, may live in peace and quietness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Sprit, One God now and forever, Amen.
